Making the most of Pompeii on arrival day
Pompeii was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and is one of the largest archaeological sites in the world. Visiting on the way to the coast is the most efficient way to see it: it sits right on the motorway between Naples and Sorrento, so you avoid a separate day trip later.
Buy your tickets online in advance, especially from spring to autumn, and bring them on your phone. Wear comfortable shoes: the Roman streets are uneven stone. Bring water and a hat in summer — there is little shade. If you land early in the morning, this is also a good way to spend the hours before hotel check-in.
Prefer Herculaneum? It is smaller, better preserved in places and quicker to visit. Tell us when you book and we plan the stop there instead.
