Naples to Rome by car: the details

The route follows the A1 motorway north through Campania and Lazio. On a normal day the drive takes 2 to 2.5 hours; allow more on Friday and Sunday evenings and around public holidays, when traffic into Rome builds up.

The high-speed train from Napoli Centrale to Roma Termini is faster between the two city centres. A private car makes sense when you start at a hotel on the coast or in Naples, travel with a family or a lot of luggage, or need to reach Fiumicino directly without changing at Termini.

Along the way you can stop at the Royal Palace of Caserta or the Abbey of Montecassino, both close to the A1. A 2-hour stop, plus 30 minutes free, costs €120 extra per vehicle (€60 per extra hour); tickets are not included.
