In short: Praiano is a quiet village on the Amalfi Coast between Positano (about 15 minutes by car) and Amalfi (about 20 minutes). Its highlights are the majolica dome of San Gennaro, the tiny beach of Marina di Praia with the Torre a Mare, the sunset beach of La Gavitella, the nearby Furore Fjord and the Path of the Gods above the village. A private transfer from Naples to Praiano costs €200 per vehicle; from Rome €650.

Praiano is the village our drivers pass every day between Positano and Amalfi, and the one many guests choose once they have seen both. It is calmer, a little cheaper, and it faces west: in the evening, the whole coast turns gold in front of you.

What to see in Praiano

Praiano is really two villages, Vettica Maggiore and Praiano, strung along the coast road and linked by steps. These are the places worth your time.

Church of San GennaroIn Vettica Maggiore, with a dome of hand-painted majolica tiles and a terrace that is one of the best viewpoints on the coast.
Marina di PraiaA tiny pebble beach in a narrow inlet, with fishing boats pulled up on the shore and a couple of seafood restaurants.
Torre a MareA Saracen watchtower above Marina di Praia, now the studio of the artist Paolo Sandulli.
La GavitellaA small beach facing west: sun until the evening and a famous sunset over Positano and Capri.
Furore FjordA few minutes east by car: a deep gorge with a tiny beach, fishermen’s houses and a high road bridge.
Path of the GodsThe most famous hike on the coast, high above Praiano, from Bomerano towards Nocelle and Positano.

A perfect day in Praiano

Morning: coffee in Vettica Maggiore and the view from the San Gennaro terrace, then down the steps to Marina di Praia for a swim before the beach fills up. Lunch: fish of the day at one of the restaurants on the cove. Afternoon: a short drive to the Furore Fjord, or a boat trip along the coast in season. Evening: sunset at La Gavitella, then dinner with a view.

Getting around takes a little planning. Praiano is a village of steps: the coast road runs along the top, the beaches are at the bottom. The SITA bus connects it with Positano and Amalfi, but in summer it is often full. For days out and evenings, a car with driver saves the climb and the wait.

When to go and where to stay

May, June and September are the best months: warm sea, open beaches and less traffic than in July and August. Most hotels and restaurants close from November to March. Hotels sit along the coast road, so a car can usually stop at the door, a real advantage over Positano. Praiano works well as a base: Positano, Amalfi and Ravello are all within 20 to 40 minutes.

Our tip: plan one evening for the sunset. Watch it from the terrace of San Gennaro or from La Gavitella, then go to dinner in Positano or Amalfi with a driver, so nobody has to worry about the road back.

Getting to Praiano

There is no train to Praiano and ferries are few. Most of our guests arrive by private car, door to door to their hotel.
